Quick answer
A cover-up tattoo is a new design drawn around an existing one so the old piece stops reading as itself. Most fade-line, script, or small–medium black-and-grey tattoos can be covered in a single 3–5 hour session at ₹3,000/hour or ₹15,000/session. Very dark or recent tattoos usually need 1–3 laser-lightening sessions first. Consultations at Inkspace are always free.
- Cover-ups use value, density and flow — not just "a bigger tattoo on top".
- Dense blackwork, neo-traditional colour, realism and botanicals cover best.
- Fine line and single-needle styles almost never work as cover-ups.
- Laser lightening is a tool, not a requirement — it's used when the source tattoo is too dark to work with cleanly.
- The honest assessment happens in person. Photos alone can't tell you what your skin will accept.
What is a cover-up tattoo?
A cover-up is a fresh tattoo designed around an existing one. The new piece uses darker values, denser elements and reworked flow so the old shape stops reading as itself. Standing at conversation distance, nobody outside the studio should be able to tell there was ever anything underneath.
It is not the same as tattoo removal, and it is not simply "a bigger tattoo on top". Cover-ups are a design problem first and a technical problem second. If you want removal instead, see our aftercare and rework overview for the differences, or ask about laser at the free consultation.
Which tattoos can (and can't) be covered?
Most old tattoos can be reworked. Some need help getting there first. Here's the honest picture:
| Existing tattoo | Cover-up outlook | Laser first? |
|---|---|---|
| Faded line-work, older black & grey | Excellent — usually one session | Rarely |
| Small–medium script or lettering | Excellent | Rarely |
| Old colour work, patchy shading | Good with the right design | Sometimes |
| Recent, dark, saturated black work | Workable after lightening | Usually 1–3 sessions |
| Tribal / dense solid black | Depends on placement and size | Often |
| Very fresh (<3 months) | Wait — skin needs to settle first | — |

How the Inkspace cover-up process works
- Free in-studio assessment. We photograph the existing tattoo under studio light, feel the skin, and talk through what you want the piece to become.
- Direction call. If a direct cover is realistic, we agree the visual direction (subject, style, palette) and book a design session. If laser will produce a better final tattoo, we say so — and explain the tradeoff.
- Custom design. Your artist draws the new piece specifically around the shape, values and edges of the existing tattoo. Cover-ups are never flash.
- Session. Most cover-ups are done in a single 3–5 hour sitting. Large or heavily saturated pieces may split across two.
- Aftercare and touch-up. Same protocol as any new tattoo, with a free touch-up window. See the full aftercare guide.
When laser lightening is worth it
Laser is a tool, not a rule. We recommend it only when the source tattoo is too dark or saturated for the design you actually want. One or two sessions is usually enough — full removal isn't the goal, only enough fade to give the cover-up room to breathe.
Sessions are spaced 6–8 weeks apart. Between the last laser session and the cover-up itself we wait a further 8–12 weeks so the skin fully settles. If you want to compress that timeline, the honest answer is: don't. A rushed cover-up over unsettled skin heals unevenly.
You do not need to complete laser before booking an assessment. Come in early — the earlier we see the tattoo, the more design options you get.
Styles that cover well
Some styles are naturally built for cover-ups. Others are not.
- Dense blackwork & neo-traditional — thick outlines and solid black fields absorb almost anything.
- Realism (black & grey) — deep shadow work hides underlying values.
- Botanical & floral — organic shapes and negative space bend around old marks.
- Japanese — waves, wind bars and clouds are designed to fill and connect large areas.
- Fine line & single-needle — almost never work as cover-ups. They can't hide anything.
If your original tattoo is small and faded, you get more style freedom. If it's large and dark, expect neo-traditional or blackwork to be the honest answer.

Healing a cover-up
Cover-ups heal like any other tattoo, but they usually carry more ink density, so the first 7–10 days feel heavier. Peeling can look darker than expected because there is more pigment lifting at once — this is normal and settles into the final piece over the following 4–6 weeks.
Full protocol lives in the Tattoo Healing Guide. The short version: keep it clean, keep it thinly moisturised, keep it out of direct sun for 4 weeks.
Common mistakes people make
- Chasing the smallest possible cover. A cover-up that just covers ends up looking cramped. Give the design room and you get a piece you actually love.
- Insisting on a specific style before assessment. Fine line over a dark tribal isn't going to happen. Trust the artist on style-to-substrate fit.
- Skipping laser when it was recommended. "Just cover it darker" produces a muddy healed tattoo. Fewer people regret laser than regret the compromise.
- Booking too soon after the original. Fresh tattoos need 3+ months to settle before they can be reworked.

Frequently asked
Can any tattoo be covered up?
Almost. Faded or older tattoos are usually straightforward. Very dark or recently completed tattoos may need 1–3 sessions of laser lightening first so the final cover-up heals cleanly. The honest answer for your specific tattoo comes from the free in-studio assessment.
How much does a cover-up tattoo cost in Delhi?
Cover-ups at Inkspace are quoted at ₹3,000 per hour or ₹15,000 per session. Small pieces typically run ₹12,000–₹18,000, medium pieces ₹18,000–₹30,000, and large half-sleeves or back panels ₹30,000–₹60,000+. The assessment and quote are always free.
Do I always need laser before a cover-up?
No. Many cover-ups happen in a single session with no laser at all. Laser is recommended only when the source tattoo is too dark or saturated for the design you want. Typically 1–2 laser sessions is enough — full removal is not the goal.
How long does a cover-up session take?
Most cover-ups are completed in a single 3–5 hour session. Large pieces or heavily saturated tattoos may split across two sittings spaced a few weeks apart.
Will the old tattoo still show through?
Done well, no. A properly designed cover-up uses value, density and flow so the surface fully re-reads as the new piece. At conversation distance the original tattoo disappears.
How long should I wait between laser and the cover-up session?
8–12 weeks after the final laser session. This lets the skin fully settle so the new tattoo takes evenly and heals cleanly.
Can I cover a very fresh tattoo I regret?
Not immediately. Wait at least 3 months for the original to fully heal and settle before we can plan a cover-up over it.
What styles work best for cover-ups?
Dense blackwork, neo-traditional colour, black-and-grey realism, botanicals and Japanese all cover well. Fine line, single-needle and other delicate styles almost never work as cover-ups because they cannot hide underlying pigment.
How do I start the process?
