What a cover-up actually is
A cover-up is a new tattoo designed around an existing one — using darker values, strategic flow and dense elements to absorb and reframe the old piece so it stops reading as itself. Done well, nobody outside the studio can tell there was ever anything underneath.
Every cover-up starts with a free in-studio assessment. Photos help, but skin behaves differently in person than on a camera.
What we can (and can't) cover
Faded line-work, small–medium black or grey pieces, script tattoos and older colour work are all straightforward candidates. Very dark, saturated or recently done pieces sometimes need one or two sessions of laser lightening before a clean cover-up is possible — we will tell you honestly on the day of the assessment.
The goal is a piece you love, not a piece that technically covers the old one but looks compromised. If lightening will produce a better final tattoo, we recommend it.
The Inkspace cover-up process
- Free assessment in the studio. We photograph, discuss options, and outline the design direction.
- Custom design — drawn to work with the shape, values and edges of the existing tattoo, not against them.
- Session planning — most cover-ups are done in one session; large or heavily saturated pieces may split across two.
- Tattoo day — arrive fed, hydrated, rested. Session length depends on size and complexity.
- Aftercare and touch-up — same protocol as any new tattoo. See our aftercare guide.
Styles that cover well
Dense blackwork, neo-traditional colour, realism with strong shading, and botanical or floral pieces tend to be the most forgiving cover-up styles. Very light or delicate styles (fine line, single-needle) are almost never suitable as cover-ups — they cannot hide what is underneath.
Cover-up pricing
Cover-ups are quoted hourly at ₹3,000 per hour or per session at ₹15,000, depending on size and complexity. The consultation and assessment are always free. See our full pricing page.
Frequently asked
Can any tattoo be covered up?
Almost. Very dark or recently completed tattoos sometimes need a session or two of laser lightening first to produce a clean final piece — we tell you honestly during the free assessment.
How much does a cover-up cost in Delhi?
Cover-ups are quoted hourly at ₹3,000 per hour or per session at ₹15,000 depending on size and complexity. The assessment is free.
Do I need to laser first?
Not always. Many cover-ups happen in a single session with no laser. Very saturated or dark pieces may benefit from 1–2 laser sessions first — the result is a lighter, more flexible cover-up.
How long does a cover-up take?
Most cover-ups are completed in a single 3–5 hour session. Large or heavily saturated pieces may be split across two sittings.
Will anyone see the old tattoo underneath?
Done well, no. The new design uses value, density and flow to fully re-read the surface. Standing at conversation distance nobody can tell there was ever anything underneath.
How do I start?
Message us on WhatsApp with a clear photo of the existing tattoo, then come in for a free assessment. Everything else — design, quote, session plan — happens after that.
