What a tattoo really costs

A plain-English breakdown of how tattoos are priced — size, detail, placement, artist experience — and how to spot a fair quote from a cut-corner one.

What you actually pay for

A tattoo price is not the cost of ink and needles — it is the cost of the artist's time, hygiene infrastructure, custom design work, and the years of skill behind every line. A cheap tattoo is almost never a bargain; a well-priced tattoo pays for itself the day it heals.

See our full Inkspace pricing page for the exact 2026 rates.

The three pricing models

  • Studio minimum. The floor for any tattoo — covers sterile setup, stencil, artist time and aftercare guidance. Inkspace's minimum is ₹2,000.
  • Per square inch. Used for small–medium custom pieces. Predictable and fair for standalone designs.
  • Hourly or per session. Used for large pieces, realism, cover-ups and sleeves where surface area alone doesn't reflect the work involved.

How size and detail change price

Two tattoos of the same width can differ dramatically in price. A minimal single-line piece and a dense micro-realism piece may share a footprint but need very different amounts of time. Detail, shading, colour transitions and skin location all affect how long the machine has to run.

Artist experience and studio quality

Experienced artists cost more because their work heals better, holds shape longer and generally does not need cover-ups later. A studio that follows medical-grade hygiene, uses single-use cartridges, sterilised tubes and traceable ink batches will always sit above the market floor — and should.

Cover-ups and touch-ups

Cover-ups are quoted hourly or per session after a free consultation — see our cover-up tattoo Delhi page. Resident-artist work gets one free touch-up within 60 days if the piece needs it.

Red flags in tattoo pricing

  • A quote that undercuts the studio minimum on a real custom piece.
  • No deposit and no drawing time built into the quote.
  • Discounts for "on-the-spot" bookings — pressure to skip the consultation.
  • Cash-only, no invoice, no GST breakdown.

Frequently asked

What is the minimum tattoo cost in Delhi?

At Inkspace the studio minimum is ₹2,000. Anything cheaper usually means shortcuts on hygiene, single-use equipment or artist time.

How much does a small tattoo cost?

Small pieces are usually quoted by square inch. The first square inch is ₹2,000; every additional square inch is ₹1,000. A 2 sq in piece is ₹3,000, a 3 sq in piece ₹4,000, and so on.

How much does a half-sleeve or sleeve cost?

Sleeves are quoted per session at ₹15,000 per sitting, or hourly at ₹3,000/hr. Total cost depends on session count, which your artist estimates during the free consultation.

Is GST included?

Quoted prices are exclusive of 18% GST. Your final invoice shows the artist fee and GST separately.

Do I pay a deposit?

Yes — ₹2,000 to lock the calendar and cover design time. It is fully adjusted against your final cost on the day of the tattoo.

Are cheaper tattoos ever a good idea?

Rarely. The cost of a bad tattoo is the cost of the original plus the cost of laser removal plus the cost of a proper cover-up. Book right the first time.
