How a tattoo actually heals

A day-by-day guide to the tattoo healing process — what is normal, what is not, and how our artists in Hauz Khas Village recommend caring for a fresh piece.

How tattoo healing actually works

A tattoo is a controlled wound. Needles deposit ink into the dermis — the layer beneath the epidermis — and the body treats the site like any other superficial injury. Full skin-surface healing typically completes in 2–4 weeks, but the deeper dermal remodelling continues quietly for up to 3–6 months.

Two things decide how well your tattoo heals: the quality of the work and the discipline of your aftercare. This guide covers the aftercare half.

Days 1–3 · The open wound phase

Expect mild swelling, warmth, redness at the edges and a clear plasma weep for the first 24–48 hours. This is normal. Your artist will either send you home in a breathable second-skin film or a light wrap.

  • Leave the initial wrap in place for the time your artist specified.
  • Wash gently with unfragranced soap and lukewarm water — no scrubbing.
  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel. No cotton fibres on the tattoo.
  • Apply a thin layer of the ointment your artist recommends. Thin means thin.

Days 4–10 · Peeling and flaking

The top layer of skin begins to lift and flake, often carrying tiny specks of dry ink. It looks worrying and it is entirely normal. Do not pick, do not scratch, do not soak.

Switch from ointment to a light, unfragranced moisturiser 2–3 times a day. Keep the piece out of direct sunlight, chlorinated pools and the sea.

Weeks 2–4 · The dull phase

Once the flaking settles the tattoo often looks slightly dull or cloudy. This is a thin layer of regenerating skin over the ink — it clears as the epidermis fully rebuilds. Keep moisturising, keep it clean and keep it out of the sun.

Months 1–6 · Deep healing

The visible surface is healed but the dermis continues to remodel around the ink for several months. Sunscreen (SPF 50, unfragranced) is the single most important thing you can do for long-term tattoo quality.

When to call us

Contact us immediately if you see: spreading redness beyond the tattoo, hot swelling, thick yellow-green discharge, fever, or a rash that appears days later. These are rare but worth catching early.

See our full tattoo aftercare instructions for the day-by-day product routine and our healing disclaimer for medical scope.

Frequently asked

How long does a tattoo take to heal completely?

The surface heals in 2–4 weeks. The dermis — where the ink actually sits — continues to remodel for 3–6 months. Most people can treat the tattoo as normal skin after 4 weeks.

Is peeling and flaking normal?

Yes. Peeling usually starts around day 4 and lasts a week. The flakes may carry small specks of ink — that is dead skin lifting, not your tattoo falling out.

Why does my tattoo look dull after healing?

A thin layer of new epidermis sits over the ink for a few weeks. Once it fully renews, the tattoo brightens back up. Regular moisturising speeds this along.

When can I swim, go to the gym or sunbathe?

No pools, sea or hot tubs for 3 weeks. Gentle gym is fine after a week if you can keep the area clean and unrubbed. Direct sun for 4 weeks; SPF 50 forever after.

Do I really need a touch-up?

Most healed tattoos are perfect first time. If a small area drops ink during healing — usually from picking or a scab lifting early — we offer one free touch-up within 60 days for resident-artist work.

When should I worry about infection?

Real infections are rare with proper aftercare. Warning signs: expanding redness beyond the outline, hot swelling that worsens after day 3, thick coloured discharge, fever. Message us straight away — do not self-diagnose.
