The client wanted a single lily, a flower with personal significance, to wrap elegantly around the tricep. The fine line approach kept the piece delicate and intimate, very much in line with their personal aesthetic. We focused on capturing the organic form without overpowering the arm itself.

Why this design

For this lily, we opted for a 'less is more' approach, ensuring each line served a purpose in defining the petal structure and stem. The challenge was maintaining botanical accuracy with minimal detail, letting the negative space contribute to its elegance. We explored a few variations, but this streamlined silhouette felt the most timeless and gentle.

Placement notes

Placing the lily on the back of the arm, specifically the tricep, allowed us to use the natural curve of the muscle to give the flower a sense of movement. This area is also relatively stable for aging, as skin stretch is minimal compared to joints. It's a discreet placement but still visible when the arm moves.

Technical challenges

We used a 3RL needle for the entire piece, focusing on consistent, single-pass lines to achieve the desired delicate effect. Saturation wasn't a concern here as it’s all linework, but ensuring uniform depth was key for even healing. The goal was clean, crisp lines that would hold without blooming, so depth control was paramount.

Style observations

Fine line botanical work, like this lily, often ages gracefully if executed properly with clean, non-overworked lines. The key for longevity is initial precision; blowouts or inconsistent depth will show over time. Clients should understand that all tattoos soften with age, but fine line can retain its clarity well with good healing and sun protection.
