Notes From Chetan Salhotra · Realism

The client came in with an old, very dark name tattoo that they really wanted gone for good. There was some scarring from the previous work, and the letters were dense, making a full concealment project. Their goal was a fresh start, something strong that would completely erase the past.

Why this design
We went with the Japanese dagger because its solid, dark hilt and substantial blade offered the necessary high-contrast areas to bury the existing letters. The strong, flowing silhouette allowed us to strategically incorporate the old tattoo's mass into the new design's shadows, essentially turning the challenge into part of the solution. A lighter, more open design wouldn't have offered the same level of assured cover-up.
Placement notes
While the exact placement isn't specified, the dagger design lends itself well to areas like the forearm, bicep, or calf. These areas generally provide a flat enough canvas for the dagger's length without distortion, and the skin in these regions tends to be resilient, supporting the saturation needed for an effective cover-up as it ages.
Technical challenges
The primary technical challenge was achieving full opacity over the old, deeply set ink. This involved multiple passes with concentrated black and color packing, ensuring each stroke contributed to burying the original tattoo without overworking the skin. We focused on heavy saturation in the dagger's hilt and darker blade areas, building up a solid value range to ensure no remnants of the old lettering would resurface, even after several years. Our strategy for contrast heavily relied on the clean, sharp lines and stark differences between the dark cover-up areas and lighter skin tones that remained.
Style observations
Traditional Japanese, especially pieces with strong blackwork and solid color fields like this dagger, ages exceptionally well. The bold outlines and highly saturated pigments tend to hold their integrity over decades, becoming richer rather than fading into ambiguity. Maintenance is primarily about sun protection; the vibrancy of the colors, particularly the blacks, will remain strong, absorbing any underlying ghosting from the old tattoo. After 5-10 years, this piece will still read as a powerful, singular design, with the old tattoo completely absorbed into its structure, which is a key goal for my cover-up work at Inkspace.

Questions About This Tattoo

FAQ

Can a tattoo like this fully cover an existing tattoo?

Most cover-ups are possible when the new design is denser and darker than the original. Pieces like this one use heavy black areas and considered linework so the old tattoo disappears under the new composition. We confirm feasibility in consultation by reviewing photos of the existing tattoo.

Was laser removal needed before this cover-up?

Some cover-ups need 2–4 laser sessions first to lighten the existing tattoo; many do not. The decision depends on how dark and saturated the original is. We tell you up front in your consultation whether laser is required.

Will the colour fade in Delhi heat and sun?

Pigment fade is mostly driven by UV exposure. In Delhi we strongly recommend SPF 50 on any healed colour tattoo when it's exposed to sun, plus an annual moisturising routine. With those habits, colour holds well for years.

Is the back a painful spot for a tattoo?

Pain varies person to person, but the back is generally considered a lower-pain placement once you settle in. Most clients describe the sensation as manageable in two to three hour blocks; longer sessions are broken with short resets.

Anything special about healing a tattoo on the back?

Healing in this area benefits from loose, breathable clothing for the first two weeks, no submerged water (pools, bathtubs), and avoiding direct sun. We send a written aftercare plan after every appointment and stay on WhatsApp through your healing window.
